Mariner Skills Training Center, Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia
Through the use of classrooms and operational trainers, the Mariner Skills Training Center provides individual training to ready sea-bound sailors to serve on surface combatants as officers, enlisted engineers, and enlisted navigation professionals. The facility features an auditorium office, administration, and training spaces along with a high-bay area to accommodate several large bridge trainers. Program areas include work spaces, student lounges, labs, brief/debrief rooms, conference areas, chart rooms, and executive areas.
The exterior featured native plants in all landscape development, with locally sourced materials, as well as natural shading and use of granite and permeable stone for all wall and walk features. The use of high-performance windows, shades and insulation improved natural light while providing comfort and energy-efficiency.
The ECI approach taken by the team ensured an overall project delivery time frame that was significantly shorter than that which would have been experienced under the more traditional design-bid-build scenario.
